The Winning Streak

Written by Lee Blessing
Directed by Brian Zoldessy

This is the story of Omar, a retired baseball umpire. Omar suddenly gets a call from Ry, a son he’s never seen and the product of a one-night stand long ago. Ry, now in his thirties, never wanted to meet his absentee father, but now feels it’s time. The Winning Streak is bittersweet comedy about the need for family in us all.

NOTE: All Tri-C Campus parking lots require a hangtag permit costing $1 except designated visitor lots which require $1 for two-hour time blocks payable at the Visitor Parking Meter Stations.

Almost Maine

Written by John Cariani
Directed by Bob Ellis

On a cold, clear, moonless night in the middle of winter, all is not quite what it seems in the remote, mythical town of Almost, Maine. As the northern lights hover in the star-filled sky above, Almost’s residents find themselves falling in and out of love in unexpected and often hilarious ways. Knees are bruised. Hearts are broken. But the bruises heal, and the hearts mend, almost, in this delightful midwinter night’s dream. This charming romantic comedy will be directed by Western Campus Theatre Coordinator Bob Ellis.

All Tri-C campus parking lots require a parking permit costing $1, except designated visitor lots which require $1 (for two-hour time blocks) payable at the Visitor Parking Meter Stations.

Two Trains Running by August Wilson
Directed by Jimmie Woody

Two Trains Running, one of Wilson’s most overtly and pointedly political works, takes place during the heyday of the black power movement, at a moment of great upheaval in U.S. race relations.

Its central theme is the manner in which the poor urban black community reacted to legal victories of the civil rights movement. Wilson stresses the sense of hopelessness that went hand-in-hand with optimism and progress in place such as 1969 urban Pittsburgh, where equal rights applied to African Americans only in theory and many blacks struggled daily with meager wages and dismal prospects.

*please be advised, this play contains strong language

NOTE: There is a Student Matinee showing on 4/4 & 4/5 at 11:30 a.m. Please contact Jeff Donnelly at 216-987-4269 for information on attending this perfromance.

Performer/composer Brian Simpson has assembled an explosive evening with his friends for 2012. Claiming Maceo Parker and Cannonball Adderley as his main influences, Gerald Albright is one of the biggest multi-genre stars. Since 1998, Walter Beasley has been one of the top 10 best selling saxmen in the business and has been named by fans and critics alike as “heir to Grover Washington Jr.’s throne.” Inspired by Jimi Hendrix and Wes Montgomery, GRAMMY award-winning guitarist Norman Brown’s performances are described as veritable “love fests.” Although Maysa started out listening to Janet Jackson, she soon discovered Al Jarreau, which led to further explorations of Dianne Reeves and Carmen McRae, thus shaping her sound and first gig as a backup singer for Stevie Wonder.

The legendary “Queen of Soul” is one of the greatest voices in the history of modern music. The Memphis native fused the gospel sounds she grew up on with R&B, jazz, and pop. After hitting her artistic and commercial stride in 1967, she made over a dozen million-selling singles, and has since recorded 20 Number One R&B hits. In 1987, Franklin became the first woman to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. She has won eighteen Grammy Awards and holds the record with eleven “Best Female R&B Vocal Performance” awards. In 2011, the jazz world celebrated her at the 25th Annual Thelonious Monk Competition, making her a Monk Institute Honoree.

David Sanborn Trio featuring Joey DeFrancesco & Byron Landham /
Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue

David Sanborn is one of the most influential and original saxophone voices in contemporary music. In three-and-a-half decades, he released 24 albums, garnering six Grammys, eight gold albums and one platinum. Joining Sanborn is B3 monster Joey DeFrancesco, who signed an exclusive recording contract with Columbia Records at the ripe old age of 17. Since then he has won the DownBeat Critics and Readers poll every year since 2002. He was Grammy-nominated for his cds Falling In Love Again (2004) and Never Can Say Goodbye (2010).

The San Francisco Chronicle calls Trombone Shorty “New Orleans’ brightest new star in a generation.” The trombonist-trumpeter-vocalist Troy “Trombone Shorty” Andrews is guaranteed to blow the roof off the State Theatre as his band stirs together old-school New Orleans jazz, funk and soul, laced with hard-rock power chords and hip-hop beats. He will be joined by Mike Ballard (bass), Tim McFatter (tenor sax), Pete Murano, guitar, Dan Oestreicher, baritone sax, Joey Peebles, drums, and Dwayne Williams, percussion.
