JAZZ IS...

THE ANNUAL TRI-C JAZZFEST FIELD TRIP

for music and non-music students

Dates:            April 17 or April 18, 2008
Time:             9:00 to 12 noon
Location:       Tri-C Metro Campus

Cost:             FREE

Jazz is a universal language; a celebration of creativity, a commentary on culture, traditions and history. The annual field trip features inspiring programming which demonstrates the music and events that have made jazz an important cultural statement.

Jazz is explored and introduced through Theatre, Music, and Dance and your students have the opportunity to experience all three jazz educational activities.  All students rotate to all three performances.  Each performance is 50 minutes long.

Theatre:

Seeds for A Love Supreme
Created and Directed by Jimmie Woody
Musical Director - Neil Chastain
Art Director - Carol Lynn Mitchell

Music and storytelling are natural companions. John Coltrane's "A Love Supreme" woven around the narrative adapted from Seedfolks, by award-winning author Paul Fleishman, unites a disconnected neighborhood into a vibrant garden community.

Music:

A Tribute to Nat King Cole
The Evelyn Wright Ensemble

Hear one of Cleveland’s finest jazz vocalists accompanied by her outstanding combo.  Evelyn brings her renditions and interpretations of one of the most memorable voices in music, Mr. Nat King Cole. She will explore The Life and Music of Nat King Cole: Nat's life through his struggles of racism and how he became an icon in American music. You will hear some of his hits like Mona lisa, Straighten up and Fly Right and Unforgettable.

A professional vocalist for over 25 years, Evelyn Wright entertains like no other in the styles of jazz, R&B and pop. She has opened for the likes of Mel Torme, Joan Rivers, Harry Belafonte, Freddie Jackson and Regina Belle, among others.

Awards include "Most Promising Female Artist" and "Favorite Female R&B Artist" in 1993 from the Midwest Urban Music Awards and was voted Best Female vocalist in 1985 in conjunction with WCPN. Evelyn has toured throughout the US and Canada performing in the top nightclubs and concert halls, performed for First Lady Rosalyn Carter, and was honored by Mayor Mike White with a plaque in recognition of entertainment provided to the city of Cleveland.

Evelyn performs at the Tri-C Jazz Fest annually, and shares lead vocals with John Morton in "After Dark," a favorite among Jerry Bruno Productions' all-occasion bands.

Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Marvin Gaye--just a few American artists whose voices have inspired generations worldwide. Passport Project, Cleveland's multi-cultural, peace-promoting arts-education organization, explores American Classics through a global lens with live music and dance, as well as electronic explorations of the genius of these artists. How do they inspire current artists? What do these voices inspire in you?

Passport Project, a local non-profit multi-cultural arts education organization, is located on Buckeye Road and E. 128th Street, where it offers workshops in dance, music, film and computer technology. Passport Project's mission is to provide exciting educational experiences that build community through the arts, encourage respect for diversity and rejection of racism, and inspire a passion for learning and the global community.  www.passportproject.org  (216) 721-1055
